Hiking

The first thing that you need to do if you are looking to go on a hiking trip is to pick the right route. You need to choose one that will pose something of a challenge, so its gets your heart rate up. But you also need to make sure that it is not way out of your comfort zone. All this will do will make your feel disheartened, and you can leave yourself open to injury if you pick a route that is too hard.

Takes some time to do dome research on the routes that you will be walking before you go. There are lots of beautiful routes all over the US that you can choose from and many have different ones for differing abilities.

For example, you can choose from varied route difficulties when hiking Big Bend in Texas or one of the many locations in Arizona like Red Rock Park. Or head up North to Washington state or even Canada for some more variety.

Boating

Of course, hiking isn’t the only outdoor activity that you can do for your vacation. If you have your sea legs, then you might want to head over to one of the great lakes or the coast for some boating. Don’t worry if you have never done this before though because you can get beginners course that will show you the ropes. That will get you sailing independently in no time.

Just remember that there are some specific safety issues when sailing that you need to be aware of. First of all, you need to wear a lifejacket at all times. You also need to be careful of the boom swing and hitting you which can cause you to fall in the water.

Horse Riding

If you are so keen on getting wet, another way to see the great outdoors is on horseback. A riding holiday lets you see the landscape in a unique way. You get to cover more ground than if you were walking. You are also open to the elements and the experiences of the great outdoors, which can make it a much more intense experience than going on a car trip.

You also get to learn to ride or get better at horsemanship. Just remember that if you aren’t using to being in the saddle all day, you might want to take a bath, at the end of each ride to stop you getting saddle sore!

Camping

It is possible to do all these activities in the day and stay in a nice plush hotel at night. But there is nothing quite like camping outside to get the full outdoor vacation experience. So try to plan at least one night out in the open if possible.
