Over the past few weeks, I’ve been using the Joby Wavo Plus Mic for my video content, and I must say, I’m quite impressed with its performance. As a video game blogger and a minor influencer, having a reliable and high-quality microphone is essential for my YouTube work. In this review, I’ll be discussing the pros and cons of the Joby Wavo Plus Mic, but to cut to the chase, it’s a fantastic piece of equipment that I highly recommend.

To begin, the Joby Wavo Plus Mic is the middle option in the Joby on-camera microphone range, with the Wavo Mic costing around £80 / $99 and the Wavo Pro costing £270 / $320, while the Wavo Plus is priced at around £190 / $230. One of the most remarkable things about the Joby Shotgun Mic is its audio quality, which accurately captures sounds, making it ideal for recording dialogue or interviews. The 3.5mm headphone jack and volume control make it easy to monitor sound on the go, while the 100Hz high-pass filter effectively reduces low ambient noise and minimizes editing time.

Another significant feature of the Joby Shotgun Mic is its compact and lightweight design. Compared to the Rode shotgun mic I previously used, which takes up valuable room in my camera bag, the Joby Shotgun Mic is easier to set up and transport, making it perfect for on-the-go recording. Additionally, the built-in shock mount reduces unwanted noise and vibrations, which is beneficial when recording in noisy environments such as a convention floor or gaming event.

One downside of the Joby Shotgun Mic is that it doesn’t come with a built-in battery. However, the auto-power mode that senses the camera’s behavior to turn the mic on and off is a plus, and the LED traffic light system indicates the battery status, changing from green to amber to red when the battery is low. Another advantage is the -10db safety track, which ensures that no audio is lost, as well as a second track with safe audio as a backup.

The mic comes with various cables to connect it to your camera, computer, or phone, including TRS to TRS, USB-C to USB-A, and USB-C to USB-C. If you want to hear comparative sound tests, check out my video review where I compare the Joby Wavo Plus to the standard camera and the Rode shotgun mic.

Overall, the Joby Wavo Plus Mic is an excellent piece of equipment for anyone seeking a high-quality, compact, and versatile microphone. The audio quality is excellent, and the compact design makes it easy to transport and set up. The built-in shock mount is a great feature that helps to reduce unwanted noise and vibrations. Although it lacks some of the Wavo Pro’s features, it is far superior to the standard Wavo. The lack of a battery may be frustrating for those on longer shoots, but it does not detract from the overall quality of the mic. I strongly suggest the Joby Wavo Plus Mic to any YouTuber who wants to get out and about without the weight and bulk of other microphones.
