So, you’re planning on taking your kids camping are you? The amount of fun and misery ahead for you are unmeasurable. In all seriousness, camping is a great activity to get into with your kids at the weekend. There are just a few lessons you should probably learn before you head out into the wilderness. Trust me I’m a dad, I’ve been there. The rest I picked up from other dads who looked about twenty years old than they actually were. Let’s get started then.

Don’t Count On Getting Bonding Time

There is an excellent chance that if you are looking to spend time bonding in the wilderness you’re in for a rude awakening. Unless, you take the phones off them, older kids will somehow manage to find signal for them in the middle of nowhere. You won’t get much time telling stories next to a campfire that’s for sure. Older kids also tend only to want to go camping if they get to bring their friends. If you’ve got young kids, you shouldn’t run into this problem for a few years so for goodness sake make the most of it.

Pack A First Aid Kit And Plasters, Lots Of Plasters

At one point I had a first aid kit in every room of the house. This is absolutely true. It seemed my kids were just constantly hurting themselves for no reason at all. One time one of them walked into the wall and nearly got a concussion. It was incredible, worrying and hilarious all at the same time. So, can you imagine how many accidents can occur with kids in the great outdoors? I’ll save you the time of counting on your fingers by telling you the answer is unlimited. Kids can hurt themselves outside in a countless number of ways, so you need to be prepared.

Keep Them Comfortable, It’s In Your Best Interest

Unless your kids love the outdoors as much as you do, I wouldn’t make them rough it. I would try and make their camping trip as comfortable as possible. That means it might be a good idea to pack some blow-up beds as well as sleeping bags. When you buy the tent make sure it at least looks luxurious and isn’t going to have them shivering all night. You don’t want to be in the middle of nowhere with kids who can’t get to sleep because they’re freezing

Make Things Easy For Yourself

Remember this camping trip is probably going to be your weekend away from work. You don’t want it to be a time filled with stress so make things easier for yourself. Don’t force yourself into a position where you have to build a fire to cook food. Instead, take a gas grill and let it do the work for you. You can find more information about gas grills on gasgrilladvice.com. Trust me, you’ll thank me when you’re not hunting for dry wood in the dark to make supper.

Enjoy Yourself

My final tip is to just enjoy it. Pick some fun activities you can do through the day and tell ghost stories at night. This is the fun part of being a dad and you should treasure these moments you have with your family.
